Westland

Brandt and his friends were now staying in Centralia. That was more than fine with Jack. He had big boys to hang around with. To no one’s surprise, Normon got betrothed to Ladoona. Brandt and his friend celebrated with Normon. Jack didn’t quite understand, he just knew that his ‘friend’ Normon was going to marry his aunt Ladoona.

Lindale had produced the carronades. Mike explained how they worked. Brandt and Rolf were impressed. “Big shotguns,” said Rolf, “these will clear anyone trying to get to the walls.”

Mike was going to bring those along with the rifled muskets and five hundred men to Westland. Brandt and Rolf accompanied him. The others stayed at Centralia or headed off to make sure various supplies and projects were on track.

It was a long caravan with dozens of wagons filled with rifled muskets and special bullets. Other wagons held the dozen carronades that they were bringing with them. The six-pound calvary cannons were pulled by horses.

Mike explained things on the way. “Simane and Able are handling the improvements to the city's defenses. They especially hated cutting down all the trees that had been planted around the city to cut down on the wind. The trees are being put to good use. They are building wooden walls around the city.

They are also digging a ditch around the city. That will add another layer of defense. I hope all of this is just a waste of time and effort.”

Brandt disagreed. “No, Michael, I fear that you are right. I got a letter from Sylvia. Several thousand Nomads demonstrated in front of Kurk. It included at least three clans. Also, there have been villages raised in Moria and Turkmenia.

If the western clans are raiding like this, the eastern clans won’t just sit it out. Westland isn’t a fortress city like Kurk. If three or four clans had gathered and attacked Westland, they might have taken the city. The loss of life, well, I don’t even want to think about it.

Now, I don’t think they can take it. I’m going to write to Sylvia and let her know what we are doing to defend Westland. It may give her some ideas.”

Rolf snorted. “The biggest problem they have is her sister and her ass of a husband running the realm’s defenses. May the Gods help them if those two are on the throne.”

“That makes me feel both a little bit better and worse, Brandt.” Said Michael. “I will send at least five hundred of the Guard to Westland every spring. That will bolster their defenses. At least until the Nomads raid themselves out.

Rolf, when we get there, could you go out and check on the villages and make sure that they are ready to move out quickly? Take an escort with you.”

As they approached the city, they could see the trees were being cut down. Men were working on the wooden walls, and others were digging the ditch. A temporary bridge over the ditch led to the southern entrance to the city.
